About BytePicks

BytePicks is maintained by a single developer. It started as an internal tool to filter YouTube subscriptions and grew into a public index. The goal is simple: provide an alternative feed optimized for technical substance rather than click-through rates.

The Problem

BytePicks

YouTube's recommendation engine optimizes for engagement and watch time, which often buries in-depth technical content under trend-chasing videos. BytePicks provides a reliable way to find substantive technical content without scrolling through clickbait.

The Name

The name is literal. 'Byte' refers to the technical focus, and 'Picks' refers to the curated nature of the index.

Architecture

If you are interested in the technical implementation, you can read the Behind the Scenes page. It details the infrastructure, the data collection process, and the scoring algorithm.

Open Source

The project is open source. The infrastructure costs are minimal, so the service is provided without charge or advertisements.

Contributing

The codebase is hosted on GitHub. If you find a bug or want to improve the scoring algorithm, pull requests are welcome.
